The Yorkshire Greenspace Alliance (YGA) is an umbrella organisation for like minded local groups focussed on protecting their countryside and green spaces from unchecked housing growth. The organisation has been formed by CPRE West Yorkshire, Wharfedale and Airedale Review Development (WARD), and Kirklees Community Action Network (KCAN) so that local groups fighting similar issues in their own neighbourhoods can share knowledge and campaigning experience and ultimately become more effective.
An inaugural meeting was recently held in Rawdon and attracted over 40 individuals including many representatives of local action groups as well as local Councillors. At the meeting the group agreed to adopt the key demands of CPRE’s recently launched Save Our Countryside Charter as their overarching aims. A management committee, comprising 8 members drawn from various local action groups, was also set up to steer the group’s work, which will be carried out by discrete project teams but will be backed up by the organisation’s countywide membership.
As a pan Yorkshire alliance we strongly believe that collectively we will have a greater influence on planning issues at a local level, so we urge anyone with similar goals to sign up and join us, whether they are an individual, a local group, or a Parish Council.
