Local people are being disregarded, and open countryside is being developed while suitable brownfield land is left unused. Evidence from here in West Yorkshire, and across England, shows the devastating effect that current policies are having on the countryside, with the Green Belt, protected areas and, above all, our 'ordinary' but hugely valued countryside, destroyed or threatened with destruction.

CPRE's charter to save our countryside

We must stand together to safeguard our countryside; for the nature it hosts, for the food it provides, and for the beauty and the freedom it gives us.

Our charter is asking for better protection for the countryside, a fair say for local communities in planning for the places where they live and work, and more housing – but of good quality and in the right places.
